For many years, construction has been a dangerous business. We all have seen historic photos of daring risks taken by craftsman at heights, surviving by the sheer will of their courage.
Today, the risks continue and at Gilbane, our core value of caring means that our No. 1 goal is getting our folks and those on our job sites home to their families each night just as they left home that morning. But is it possible to build incident and injury free?
Safe behavior commonly accepted today was unheard of in the past. How will construction professionals years from now look back on us and judge our practices?
Over the last several years, the Gilbane team has trained and worked through discipline and dedication to reduce our injuries by more than 75 percent. Our mandatory 6-foot fall protection has saved 19 workers who fell and otherwise would have lost their life.
But we still have accidents and so continue to strive to reduce the injuries.
So is having zero accidents possible? Can we stay accident free for an hour, even just a day? Can we stay accident free for a week, a month?
Yes, zero incidents is possible. This is true for us at home, with the kids, at the ball field, you name it.
Through the right personal protective equipment, the right training and an unwavering belief and commitment to the possible, we can eliminate injuries and save even more lives in the years to come. •
