Langevin, Maeda to discuss STEM initiative

PROVIDENCE – U.S. James R. Langevin and Rhode Island School of Design President John Maeda will talk about their STEM to STEAM initiative at a public forum on Sept. 26.

Langevin and Maeda will speak about the importance of integrating arts education into the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields. The two gave a briefing in Washington, D.C., earlier this year on RISD-led initiatives that demonstrate how STEAM promotes more effective work force development, a news release said.

Langevin said the STEAM initiative is part of his plan to close the skills gap that has resulted in businesses unable to find qualified workers to fill positions, even in the time of high unemployment, he said.

The forum will take place at The Rhode Island Foundation at 2 p.m.; Rhode Island College President Nancy Carriuolo and representatives of the R.I. Science and Technology Advisory Council, The Rhode Island Foundation, Rhode Island College, and the R.I. Department of Education, will be in attendance.
