Megan Jane Goguen didn’t have to look too far when she was searching for inspiration. In her 40 Under Forty application, Goguen – now managing partner at Hanson Curran LLP – said she was inspired to become an attorney because of her father, Kevin Conboy.
“[He] loved being a trial lawyer,” she wrote. “His enthusiasm was contagious and convinced me at a very young age to follow in his footsteps. When he fell ill, we took comfort in knowing that he had truly enjoyed his life.”
Born and raised in Yorktown Heights, N.Y., Goguen graduated cum laude from Providence College in 1994 and went on to receive her law degree from St. John’s University in 1997.
At the age of 24, Goguen began her legal career as an associate trial attorney in White Plains, N.Y.
In November 1999, another influential man in her life inspired her to make an important career decision. She became engaged to a native Rhode Islander, Mark Goguen, and made the decision to relocate to Rhode Island.
In less than a year, she passed the Rhode Island bar exam and landed a job as an associate trial attorney at Hanson Curran.
In 2005, Goguen was named partner at the firm, becoming only the second woman to be so named at Hanson Curran. In January 2007, she became the first female managing partner of the firm.
Managing a staff of 19, overseeing marketing efforts and keeping an active litigation practice may seem daunting, especially with two children at home. But it is work that Goguen is well-suited for and excels at.
“[I] enjoy courtroom advocacy and find that [my] ability to comfortably speak publicly … and to think quickly when formulating successful arguments has helped [me] considerably in the courtroom,” Goguen said. “Outside of the courtroom, [my] insight into the personality traits of others has helped [me] effectively manage and motivate staff.” •
