PROVIDENCE – A Providence developer is seeking to expand an office complex behind the Dunkin’ Donuts Center.
On Tuesday, Omni Combined W.E. received permission from the City Plan Commission to move forward with a six-story building on the site of a parking lot at the corner of Cedar and Bradford streets.
The board signed off on the concept, size and location of the building, and allowed Omni to move forward with demolition and foundation work.
However, Omni will need to return to the board with a more detailed plan before it can start work on the building itself, which is typical with such projects.
William DiStefano, principal at Omni, said the new structure would contain 56,000 square feet of office space across four upper levels and 64 parking spaces on the two lowest levels.
The building will join nine others across the street that Omni operates as the West Exchange Center. DiStefano said the new building could accommodate tenants too large for Omni’s existing buildings on its five-acre campus, which includes Providence Business News.
“There are large potential users inquiring but we don’t have that kind of large space left,” he said.
DiStefano said the project furthers an effort by Omni to create a professional office campus in the area between Federal Hill and Route 10. Omni hopes to start construction on the new building later this year and finish 12 months later.
The cost of constructing the new building yet to be finalized, DiStefano said.
