R.I. Business Plan Competition winners announced

PROVIDENCE – The three winners of the R.I. Business Plan Competition are AmbiLabs, Lucidux and PriWater, as announced at the RIBX business expo on Tuesday afternoon.

AmbiLabs, manufacturer of turnkey, field monitoring laboratories that enable scientists and engineers to quickly and accurately assess air pollution levels, was selected as the “green” winner and also the winner of the $50,000 cash prize. The company, headed by Andy Tolley of Warren, will also receive $26,000 in services.

The winner of the entrepreneur track was Lucidux, led by Jason Harry of Providence, a developer of software that provides three-dimensional images to help surgeons perform minimally invasive procedures.
The winner of the student track was PriWater, which has formulated a prenatal beverage supplement to reduce birth defects; the company was headed by Brown University undergraduates Robert D. Aziz, William Lim Do and Gordon Hood.

The entrepreneur track and student track winners each received $25,000 in cash and $28,000 in services; finalists received $5,000 in cash and $9,300 in services. In order to be eligible to win, applicants agreed to establish or maintain operations in Rhode Island.

The finalists were: Maternova Inc., Moondust Macarons, MoveAround IV Buggy, PriviCare, and richtr.tv.

“This year’s competition attracted a record number of applicants and many promising ideas, and there are many people across the state who look forward to helping them prosper,” said competition co-chair David Mitchell, co-chair and dean of the College of Business at Johnson & Wales University.

Competitors submitted 103 business plans in a range of industries, including manufacturing, biotechnology, health care and Internet companies.

The R.I. Business Plan Competition was established in 2000 and has awarded more than $1 million in prizes.
