R.I. native tests new deep diving suit

PROVIDENCE –The founder of Rhode Island-based nonprofit Ocean Opportunity was the first to train in a new deep sea diving system called the Exosuit, the organization announced.
Michael Lombardi attended the first weeklong training session for the Exosuit.
The suit protects its pilot from the dangers of pressure changes underwater by maintaining surface pressure, even 1,000 feet deep. Special rotary joint technology allows free movement so the diver can carry out tasks.
“I am thrilled at the possibilities of this new found collaboration,” Lombardi said in a statement. “Merging mutual interests in ocean exploration between industry, academia, and the private sector has been a formula at work – and putting the Exosuit to work for science uncovers an entirely new realm of unexplored ocean space. This could open several lifetimes of new marine science opportunities.”
Lombardi and a team of researchers are planning one of the first expeditions to use the Exosuit. They plan to study alien marine life in the open ocean at depths of 1,000 feet. It will be the first time humans can see and document creatures in their natural habitat at that depth.
