PROVIDENCE – Gas prices in Massachusetts and Rhode Island resumed their upward climb after a one-week respite, AAA Southern New England reported Monday.
The auto club’s Feb. 7 survey found the average price of self-serve, unleaded regular at Ocean State stations was $3.18, up one penny from last week and 6 cents above the national average of $3.12.
In Massachusetts, gasoline averaged $3.11, also up by 1 cent from a week ago.
Last week, gas prices in Rhode Island were down by 2 cents from the previous week and unchanged in Massachusetts.
Nevertheless, in New York, crude oil for March delivery declined 36 cents, or 0.4 percent, to $88.67 a barrel at 9:34 a.m. on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Futures prices are up 25 percent from a year ago. Bloomberg News said oil declined for a third day on skepticism that a rebounding U.S. economy will reduce surplus inventories in the world’s biggest oil-consuming country.
In its survey, AAA found prices in Rhode Island ranging from $3.12 to $3.32 per gallon for unleaded regular this week. A year ago, gas prices in Rhode Island stood at $2.71 per gallon.
At stations in Rhode Island this week, the survey found average self-serve prices of $3.30 per gallon for midgrade unleaded, $3.42 for premium unleaded gasoline, and $3.58 for diesel.
