AIA Rhode Island presents 2007 Design Awards

PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Chapter of the American Institute of Architects has bestowed its highest honor on Roger Williams University President Roy J. Nirschel, making him an honorary member for his contributions to the field of architecture and to AIA’s Rhode Island Chapter.
Nirschel was honored Friday at Roger Williams Park Casino, along with the 14 winners of the chapter’s 2007 Design Awards. Projects demonstrating outstanding achievement in architectural design received Honor Awards, while projects the judges deemed noteworthy received Merit Awards.
The winners of the 2007 AIA Rhode Island Design Awards are:
RESIDENTIAL
Honor Award:

• Estes / Twombly Architects Inc., for the firm’s work on Barker House and Danevic/Bernard House on Block Island.
Merit Award:
• Estes / Twombly Architects Inc., for its work on the Atwood House in Jamestown.
ADAPTIVE REUSE / RENOVATION
Honor Award:

• Burgin Lambert Architects, for its work on the Jamestown Town Hall.
Merit Awards:
• Two Ton Inc., for its work on Fire Station No. 3 in East Providence.
• Durkee, Brown, Viveiros, Werenfels Architects, for the firm’s work on the Washington Mills Lofts in Lawrence, Mass.
• Newport Collaborative Architects Inc., for its work on Slatersville Mill in North Smithfield.
URBAN DESIGN
Honor Award:

• Friedrich St. Florian, for his work on the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.
HISTORIC PRESERVATION
Honor Award:

• Newport Collaborative Architects Inc., for its work on the Fort Adams Youth Barracks in Newport.
Merit Award:
• Newport Collaborative Architects Inc., for its work on the Castle Hill Inn and Resort in Newport.
COMMERCIAL
Honor Awards:

• 3SIXO, for its work on CIRCA Restaurant in Memphis.
• Estes / Twombly Architects Inc., for its work on the Boston Golf Grounds Building in Hingham, Mass.
Merit Award:
• Estes / Twombly Architects Inc., for its work at 79 Thames St.
INTERIORS
Honor Award:

• Estes / Twombly Architects Inc., for its work on the Metcalf / Davis Renovation in Newport.
Merit Award:
• 3SIXO, for its work at STIX Restaurant and Lounge in Boston.
This year’s winners were selected from more than 70 submissions by a jury of five judges drawn from the New England architectural community – Douglas Dick, AIA, of Carlone, Dick, LaFleche and Associates in Cambridge, Mass.; David Dixon, FAIA, of Good Clancy in Boston; Valerie Fletcher, PhD, of Adaptive Environments Inc. in Boston; Stanley Solarski, AIA, of Kenneth Boronson Architects in New Haven; and Keith Yancey, AIA, of Lam Partners Inc. in Cambridge – who were advised by Derek Bradford of Bradford Associates in Providence.
