PROVIDENCE – American Express is once again inviting Rhode Islanders to shop local this holiday season, kicking off its eighth annual Small Business Saturday event on Nov. 25.

The financial institution is sponsoring various events, including a block party on Westminster Street in Providence. The day, celebrated in different ways throughout the country, is designed to highlight small, independent businesses in the community.

“Even more consumers and communities like Providence are coming together to support all types of business, from retail shops and restaurants, to fitness studios and records stores,” according to an AmEx announcement.

The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Hope Street Merchants Association will also be offering various discounts and activities. AmEx helped create Small Business Saturday in 2010 in response to what it describes as a “pressing need: getting more customers during the busy holiday shopping season.”
