Amgen honors 8 teachers from R.I., Mass.

PROVIDENCE – The four Rhode Island and four Massachusetts recipients of the 2007 Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence were honored at a ceremony this morning at the Providence Biltmore.
A keynote address by Gov. Donald L. Carcieri preceded the awards to the eight teachers and the presentations of awards to their schools. Each teacher was awarded an unrestricted grant of $5,000, and his or her school received another $5,000 for use in expanding or enhancing science resources or programs, or for professional development.
The Amgen program was designed to recognize K-12 teachers in public and private schools whose dedication to their students’ education has had a significant impact on the next generation of scientists.
The local winners were:
• Robert Williams “Otter” Brown of The Wheeler School in Providence.
• Joel Gluck of the New England Laborers/Cranston Public Schools’ Construction Career Academy in Cranston.
• Doris E. Lawson of Potter-Burns Elementary School in Pawtucket.
• Daniel J. Potts of Chariho Regional Middle School in Hopkinton.
• Angela Cardono Cunard of Seekonk High School.
