FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
April 1 deadline to apply for community-preservation grants
Middletown, RI – February 29, 2016 – The Aquidneck Land Trust invites neighborhood groups and coalitions to apply for the 2016 Merritt Neighborhood Fund Grant to conserve the island’s small open spaces.
Grants range from $100 to $2,500. Applications may be found at http://ailt.org/2011/09/merritt-fund-recipients/
The deadline to submit a proposal is April 1. Funding decisions will be made by May 1.
The Fund provides modest support to neighborhood preservation and land use projects in order to strengthen the island’s identity and natural character.
The Merritt Neighborhood Fund was established in 1999 to honor the late Peter M. Merritt, the organization’s visionary past president, for his decade of leadership.
Projects range from pocket parks and community gardens to the transformation of neglected properties for recreation and environmental benefit.
Past examples include the installation of a new hoop house at the Methodist Community Gardens, the beautification of the playground in Island Park and the installation of rain gardens at Rogers High School.
Aquidneck Land Trust’s time-sensitive mission is to conserve Aquidneck Island’s open spaces and natural character for the lasting benefit of our community. The organization has conserved 2,552 acres on 76 properties across Aquidneck Island since its founding in 1990. ALT is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, and the first land trust in Rhode Island to have received national accreditation. For more information, visit www.AquidneckLandTrust.org.
