PROVIDENCE – Five temporary art installations have been placed in Providence along the vacant I-195 lands, joining 12 that were placed on the parcels in 2014.
The so-called “Creative Mile” installation is intended to act as a temporary improvement to lands that will eventually be developed. The I-195 Redevelopment District Commission issued a request for proposals from established and emerging artists.
Those selected received up to $4,000 for materials.
“It is the commission’s hope that the work installed within the 20 acres will enrich the surrounding urban environment and generate excitement for the I-195 land, while giving local individuals a very visible space to showcase their creative talents.”
Selected this year were the following artists: Howie Sneider, whose “Good Places to Know #3” is installed on Parcel 2; Greg Nemes, whose “Urban Chapel” installation is on Parcel 9; Kenn Speiser, whose “Mother & Child” sculpture is on Parcel 34; Nancy Gaucher-Thomas and Merle Mainelli Poulton, “The Sky is the Limit” at Parcel 37; and Jenny Sparks whose sculptures entitled “Play, Rest, See” occupy Parcel 1A.
