CRANSTON – The 13th annual Artists’ Exchange gingerbread-house decorating contest will take place on Saturday, Dec. 2 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Participants will start with a graham cracker framework and – using frosting, cereal, pretzels and colorful candy – decorate a miniature candy home. There is no age limit for this holiday-themed event. However, reservations are highly recommended.

Shannon Casey, the event’s coordinator and director of visual arts programming at Artists’ Exchange, said in a statement: “The gingerbread decorating contest is a family tradition. … It is exciting to see families return year after year and watch how the children and the event have grown. This is my 11th year working to organize the event and every year is more fun than the last.”

Construction of the graham cracker house frames has begun, and Artists’ Exchange staff expect to have 600 blank templates completed by Dec. 2.

Judging will occur in categories delineated by age and participants are welcome to take their creations home at the end of the day. In addition, families can opt to work on a house together and be judged in a separate family category.

Those houses entered into the contest will be photographed and winners will be announced online by Dec. 4. Prizes include Artists’ Exchange class gift certificates redeemable for upcoming winter session classes.

Participation costs $15 per house or $13 in advance. The Artists’ Exchange is located at 50 Rolfe Square in Cranston.
