ATTLEBORO – Local nonprofit theater group Triboro Youth Theatre Inc. on Tuesday won $20,000 in a Facebook contest held by JPMorgan Chase Co.

Attleboro-based Triboro Youth Theatre garnered 1,693 votes to rank 108 out of the 200 winners.

“I am stunned and truly humbled,” said theater founder and artistic director Vivian Humphrey. “This would never have happened without the incredible effort made in recent days by TYT’s supporters and members of all ages.”

The $20,000 grant will help the group continue to provide cultural enrichment to local youth regardless of their experience or ability to pay. The theater, founded in 1996, provides a variety of theater opportunities on- and off-stage for youth ranging from age 4 to students in high school.

“On behalf of the board, we want to extend our deepest gratitude to JPMorgan Chase for sponsoring this contest and giving supporters of local nonprofits like TYT a unique opportunity to help,” said Thomas Nunan, chairman of board.

The Chase Community Giving contest was open to 501(c)3 organizations with annual operating expenses of less than $1 million. Facebook users were able to vote for their favorite charities online from June 15 to July 12.

JPMorgan Chase, which sponsored the contest, awarded $250,000 to the top charity, $100,000 to each of the next four runners-up, and $20,000 each for the next 195 charities.

The Harry Potter Alliance Inc. of Somerville, Mass., won first place in the contest with 38,689 votes. The organization advocates for equality and human rights as well as literacy through its work with various nongovernmental organizations.
