NORTH KINGSTOWN – The Port of Davisville has already broken its auto import record this year, importing 242,568 automobiles by Oct. 18, the Quonset Development Corp. announced Tuesday.
The port has broken its auto import record 11 of the past 12 years. The previous record was set last year at 241,851 imported autos.
The Port of Davisville, located in the Quonset Business Park, is a public port and consistently among the top 10 auto importers in North America. It has four berths for vessels and more than 60 acres of terminal storage.
The port is currently renovating Pier 2, which QDC calls its “workhorse” pier, handling heavy cargo shipments such as auto imports. Renovations include an extension of the pier and dredging of the bay to allow for large ships, among other projects.
“The Port of Davisville has seen remarkable growth in recent years,” said R.I. Commerce Secretary and Quonset Development Corp. Board of Directors Chairman Stefan Pryor in a statement. “It is a great economic asset for the state of Rhode Island. We are excited to see it utilized in the development of the offshore wind industry and manufacturing purposes, all while continuing to break auto import records.”
The Quonset Development Corp. is a quasi-public agency that manages the Quonset Business Park, including the Port of Davisville.
