Use: The renovation of the historic BankNewport building in Newport’s Washington Square blends the old with the new design, as well as some repair work. The building, originally built in 1929 and opened in 1930, has received an extensive facelift, during which renovation crews uncovered ornamental details of the ceiling, such as the decorative plaster. Construction crews worked diligently to reveal and refresh the details and make refurbishments. The center atrium had remained exposed from the floor to the original ceiling, but a drop ceiling that was installed in the east and west wings covered the ornamental details. The artistry and the ornate ceiling details were restored by molds to reproduce the original designs, blending the old and new seamlessly. Farrar Associates, the project’s general contractor, sourced and matched exterior marble and granite to make upgrades to the building and retain its original charm. Providence-based DBVW Architects drafted the architectural schematic, designing it to modernize the space, while preserving the building’s history. The project was expected to be completed in February or March. Work on the project began in June 2019.
