MIDDLETOWN – BankNewport is expanding into northern Rhode Island.

The Middletown-based community bank recently broke ground on a new branch in Lincoln, which is slated to open in May 2023, according to a news release. The branch at 3 Wake Robin Road will be the company’s first branch in Lincoln and its 19th statewide.

The new branch comes as other community banks, such as The Washington Trust Co., also expand their brick-and-mortar presences across the state, including in northern Rhode Island. In contrast, national and regional financial institutions have seen a wave of branch closings in recent years, including Citizens Bank, Webster Bank and Berkshire Bank.

“We look forward to integrating into the Lincoln community as a good neighbor and partner to the businesses and residents of the town, and providing an unparalleled banking experience for every customer to ensure their individual financial needs are being met,” Mary Leach, BankNewport’s executive vice president, chief retail banking and lending officer, said in a statement.

The 2,500-square-foot, full-service branch will include personal teller machines and a five-member staff, including a relationship banker, designated mortgage banker and a business banker, the release stated.
