NEWPORT – “Tall Ships in Newport Harbor,” the signature painting for the Amica Insurance Tall Ships Rhode Island 2007, goes on exhibit today at BankNewport’s Washington Square branch, where it will hang until the Tall Ships fest gets under way this summer, festival organizers said.

The painting is by Peter Layne Arguimbaua second-generation artist who was raised in a marine environment.

Arguimbau, of Greenwich, Conn., emulates the techniques and luminous style of the Flemish masters; he grinds his own pigments and cooks his own oil-resinous media using amber sandarac and rosin varnishes. His “Tall Ships in Newport Harbor” was commissioned by festival organizers.

The 18-by-29-inch signed, framed original is to be auctioned June 30 at the International Tall Ships Ball. Posters and limited-edition prints of the painting will be available from event organizers after Easter at the Tall Ships office, 71 Long Warf, Newport.

The Tall Ships festival, to be held June 27 to July 1 along the downtown Newport and Fort Adams waterfront, will be the city’s largest display of ships since the U.S. Bicentennial. It will feature 22 Tall Ships from around the world, and will be capped by a Parade of Sail on Sunday, July 1.

BankNewport has been an early supporter of the event, giving $10,000 last year and $25,000 this year.
