Bankrate: Providence top 5 city in U.S. to retire

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island’s capital was ranked the fifth-best city to retire in the United States, according to a report from Bankrate.com.

The study weighed cost of living, crime rate, health care, the population of those 65 or older, public transportation, taxes, things to do, weather and well-being.

Providence ranked No. 5 with a “great” rating in health care, and two “good” ratings in well-being and population 65 or older. The city also ranked well for its low crime rate and an average cost of living. Providence was also found to have a “poor” rating in public transportation, an “average” in things to do and “below average” for weather.

Pittsburgh ranked No. 1 in the study, followed by Boston, Los Angeles and Denver.

Hartford, Conn., was the only other city in New England to make the 50-city ranking at No. 37.

The report used metrics from the U.S. Census, The Tax Foundation, Creative Vitality Suite, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, The Council for Community and Economic Research, United Health Foundation, Gallup Sharecare Well-Being Index, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Healthview Services and Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
