Banks raise 5 tons of food for hungry

The Citizens Bank softball team was the winner of an Aug. 6 softball tournament at RiverPoint Park in West Warwick that capped the second annual “Battle of the Banks: Pitching In to Strikeout Hunger.”

But hungry people across the state were the real winners as Citizens, Bank of America, Sovereign Bank, Bank Rhode Island, Domestic Bank and Webster Bank all pitched in to aid the nonprofit Rhode Island Community Food Bank’s summer drive, accepting donations of nonperishable foods at branches across the region.

Together, the banks were able to collect and donate more than 10,000 pounds of food (a full truckload of nonperishables, including beans, pasta, tuna, fruits and vegetables) in a season that is one of the state’s hungriest.

“As we continue to beat the drum for food and monetary donations this summer, it’s great to know that we have the commitment of these banks to help,” said Bernie Beaudreau, the Food Bank’s executive director. “We still have a long way to meet our goal, but every bit helps.”

The Rhode Island Community Food Bank, based in Providence, serves 51,000 Rhode Islanders each month through a network of more than 400 certified member agencies. In the past fiscal year, it distributed a record 8.4 million pounds of food.
