BARRINGTON – The Bay Team, the adult and youth anti-drug and alcohol coalition has been selected as the winner of a national excellence award to be conferred in Washington, D.C., in February.

The award – a Got Outcomes! Coalition of Excellence Award – recognizes the Bay Team’s successful mitigation of underage drinking in Barrington.

Competing with 44 other coalitions from around the United States, the BAY Team provided research and data showing past 30-day alcohol use decreasing by 30 percent for high school students and 50 percent for middle school students between 2007 and 2013.

The team also reported a 36-percent increase in the number of youths who indicated that they had difficulty gaining access to alcohol from 2009 to 2013.

The Bay Team’s director, Kathleen Sullivan, indicated that the recognition reinforced the sense of progress that the team has developed.

“This is one of a number of awards our team has received in recent years because of our community efforts in solving Barrington’s underage drinking problem,” Sullivan said.

News of the achievement came through the R.I. Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals, which contributed part of the funding used by the group. The department funds 35 prevention providers in Rhode Island.
