PARTNERS HEALTHCARE CEO Dr. David Torchiana has announced he is retiring in April, according to the Boston Business Journal Tuesday.

PROVIDENCE – Dr. David Torchiana, CEO of Partners HealthCare will retire at the end of April, the company confirmed Tuesday.

The Boston Globe Tuesday said that there had been tension with Torchiana and two major hospital leaders on the strategy of the company’s plans.

Torchiana became CEO of the health care organization in 2015. Torchiana reportedly had been leading an initiative to cut costs and to change the company’s business strategy.

“I am fortunate to have worked at MGH and Partners for my entire professional life and to have been given the opportunity to lead us forward at the culmination of my career,” said Torchiana in a statement. “I look forward to retirement and have full confidence in the future of our organization which is filled with talented and dedicated people focused on our important mission to make health care better and take exceptional care of the patients that have placed their trust in our hands.”

The Globe also reported there had been leadership disagreements over the company’s planned expansion into Rhode Island (through the acquisition of and merger with Care New England), as well as a plan to acquire Harvard Pilgrim Health Care.

“Care New England Health System has worked diligently over the past two years towards a planned acquisition by Brigham Health, a founding member of Partners HealthCare,” said CNE spokesman Jim Beardsworth Tuesday. “We expect today’s announcement by Dr. David Torchiana, chief executive of Partners HealthCare, that he is stepping down from that position, will have no impact on our ability to finalize this important transaction.”

Partners Healthcare did not immediately respond to inquiries on whether the move could impact the planned merger between CNE and Partners Healthcare.

Partners HealthCare, Brigham Health and Care New England are currently undergoing a 90-day merger review by the R.I. Department of Health.
