The recent announcement that two Providence chefs have been named finalists in the 2019 James Beard Awards program is validation of what Rhode Islanders have known for years: We have some of the best restaurants around.
James Mark, chef and founder of north, and Ben Sukle, chef and co-founder of both birch and Oberlin, have been counted among the leading lights in the foodie scene ever since their restaurants opened.
The two are being recognized in the Best Chef: Northeast part of the Beard awards, which looks at chefs across the nation in a number of regions, as well as just for New York City. The criteria for the award include “chefs who set high culinary standards and also demonstrate integrity and admirable leadership skills.”
Mr. Mark and Mr. Sukle are among five finalists from the region, the other three coming from Boston. For the Beard awards, the Northeast region includes all of New England plus New York state.
We may be excused for having a rooting interest in the outcome of this competition, just so long as a Rhode Islander wins.
