EAST PROVIDENCE – Sister of Mercy Marybeth Beretta has been appointed third president of St. Mary Academy – Bay View as of Wednesday by the school’s board of trustees, according to a release sent out by the school Thursday.

“It is truly a joy and privilege to be a part of the journey that leads to the education of generations of young women who will not only contribute to our world both nationally and globally, but who will influence our society with values that are inspired by and grounded in Mercy,” said Beretta in a statement.

A Rhode Island native and Salve Regina University (bachelor’s degree) and University of Rhode Island (MBA) alumna, Beretta has pursued a career in Catholic education across the state. She was previously the vice president of financial administration/Chief Financial Officer at La Salle Academy in Providence for 22 years. Then, in 2013, she took up the position of dean of students at Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School in Gwynedd Valley, Pennsylvania.

Chair of the board of trustees, Emily Gilcreast ‘99 said in a statement: “The Board of Trustees is appreciative of the participation, patience and wisdom of the St. Mary Academy – Bay View community throughout the search process, and we are confident Sr. Marybeth Beretta is an excellent choice to further advance our mission and lead Bay View into the future.”

Founded in 1874 and accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Bay View Academy is an all-girls Catholic school for students from pre-Kindergarten through grade 12. Located in East Providence, the school is sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy.
