Bill would create adult flu vaccine program in R.I.

PROVIDENCE – Sen. Elizabeth H. Roberts, D-Cranston and Warwick, introduced legislation Tuesday to create a central purchasing and dispensing program for adult flu vaccine.

Under the pilot program created by the legislation, the state’s existing childhood vaccination program would be expanded to include adult flu vaccine, to prevent shortages and help ensure distribution. Under the program, all adult vaccine in the state would be purchased by the R.I. Health Department and distributed to health care providers and clinics, the same way the state’s childhood vaccine program works.

The program could save patients and doctors money through the state’s ability to buy the vaccine in bulk. The legislation would make Rhode Island the first state with a centralized adult vaccine distribution program.

The legislation has passed the Senate and is now before the House Finance Committee. Similar legislation has been filed in the House by Rep. Steven M. Costantino, D-Providence.
