PROVIDENCE – Total compensation costs for a private industry employer in New England averaged $42.06 per hour worked in September, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Tuesday.
Of that compensation, 68.6 percent, or $28.84 per hour, was attributed to wages and salaries, while 31.4 percent, or $13.22 per hour, was attributed to benefits.
Benefits broke down into insurance at $3.63 per hour, paid leave at $3.25 per hour, legally required work benefits, such as Social Security and Medicare, at $3 per hour and retirement and savings at $1.97 per hour.
The United States average total compensation per hour was $34.53 in September, $7.53 per hour less than New England. The BLS said New England had the highest hourly compensation in the nation.
