PROVIDENCE – Employment in the 2017 second quarter (measured in June) in Providence County was 287,200, a 0.5 percent increase year over year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Tuesday.
Employment increased in 318 of the largest 346 counties in the United States in the quarter. The U.S. average job growth rate was 1.7 percent.

The average weekly wage in Providence County rose 1.5 percent year over year in the quarter to $1,016. Providence wage growth ranked No. 266 for the fastest wage growth out of the largest 346 counties in the nation.
The average weekly wage in the U.S. rose 3.2 percent year over year to $1,020.
Providence County also had 18,200 covered establishments in the quarter.
Bristol County, Mass., had 17,500 covered establishments in the quarter. Employment was 230,500, a 1.3 percent increase year over year (No. 200 nationally).
The average weekly wage in Bristol County, Mass., in the quarter was $950, a 1.3 percent increase year over year.
The BLS also reported in the quarter, Rhode Island had 37,300 covered establishments, 487,300 employed workers (an increase of 1 percent year over year) and an average weekly wage of $980 (a 2.6 percent increase year over year).
National employment was estimated to be 145.2 million for the quarter, an increase of 1.7 percent year over year. The largest 346 counties in the U.S. accounted for 72.7 percent of total U.S. employment and 77.7 percent of total wages.
Los Angeles County experienced the largest nominal employment increase of 71,900 to 4.4 million – the largest employment of any county in the country. Santa Clara County, Calif., recorded the largest average weekly wage in the quarter at $2,392. San Mateo County, Calif., experienced the largest nominal year-over-year increase of average weekly wage, rising $214 to $2,093.
