PROVIDENCE, R.I. (April 9, 2009) – On April 29, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) and its employees will take another step toward better health, joining walkers across the U.S. on National Walk@Lunch Day.

Walk@Lunch Day is a national workplace walking program that encourages people to spend part of their lunch break walking. Last year, the Walk@Lunch events drew tens of thousands of participants in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.

The Rhode Island Walk@Lunch Day program will take place during lunch breaks on April 29. BCBSRI will help businesses organize groups of walkers and asks that all Rhode Island businesses encourage their employees to participate.

“Walk@Lunch Day is an easy way for working people to fit some exercise into their busy lives,” said Dr. Harold Picken, vice president of Health Operations at BCBSRI. “It is simple to pick a starting date – April 29 – and then schedule a 30-minute walk at lunch every work day. Making it a habit can contribute to an individual’s overall health. Physical activity helps Rhode Islanders lead healthier lives and reduce stress.”
