Blue Cross creates space for nursing mothers

PROVIDENCE – Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island has opened two lactation rooms for its working mothers, noting that breast milk offers the best nutrition for babies, but new moms returning to their jobs often have difficulties avoiding a switch to formula.
The company set up the rooms at 444 Westminster St. and LaSalle Square, each with two private pumping stations, comfortable and hygienic chairs, refrigerators, outlets and sinks. Employees can use the rooms during breaks throughout the workday.
“More than 70 percent of our employees are women, and when our working mothers return from maternity leave they need a clean, comfortable, private place to express milk,” said Liza Glick, human resource generalist at Blue Cross. “Gone are the days when women had to hide in the bathroom to pump.”
