Blue Cross, Landmark reach agreement

Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island said Friday that it had reached an agreement with Landmark Medical Center on terms to continue their business relationship.

As part of the deal, Blue Cross said, “the companies acknowledge that BCBSRI does not owe Landmark money from previous contracts, and have signed a two-year contract that establishes reimbursement increases that are consistent with those of other BCBSRI network hospitals.”

No further information was immediately available.

Landmark and Blue Cross have been in a heated dispute for months over reimbursements, with a focus on back payments that the hospital claimed it was due, and which Blue Cross said were absolutely not owed.

U.S. Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy and Gov. Donald L. Carcieri both had interceded to encourage the companies to reach an agreement. Each had expressed concern that if a contract was not signed, residents of northern Rhode Island would either have to go to a hospital other than Landmark, or would have to pay high fees for any services provided there.
