Blue Cross Medicare Advantage plans earn 5-star rating

PROVIDENCE – Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island’s 2022 Medicare Advantage health maintenance organization, or HMO, and preferred provider organization, or PPO, plans have received five-star ratings from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the insurer announced this month.

Five stars is the highest mark that CMS gives Medicare Advantage plans during its annual evaluation and rating of plans nationwide. This year, CMS rated 471 plans.

“We’re thrilled to be recognized by our members and CMS as a five-star plan!” said Martha Wofford, BCBSRI CEO and president. “Our commitment to passionately lead a state of well-being across Rhode Island drives us every day to understand and deliver on the needs of the more than 60,000 Medicare Advantage members we serve. Achieving this elite designation is a testament to our employees and the providers we work with throughout the state.”

According to Blue Cross, it is the only health insurer in Rhode Island to receive a five-star rating for all of its 2022 Medicare Advantage plans.

Plans with a five-star rating usually see lower out-of-pocket costs and experience better care than in lower-rated plans, Blue Cross said.
