Books on the Square under new ownership

PROVIDENCE – Books on the Square, an independent bookstore in Wayland Square that voluntarily entered receivership about two years ago, has been acquired by Learning Ventures LLC.
The transaction included a payment to the receiver, Peter Furness, “plus cash and book returns, to settle debts with book suppliers,” according to store manager Jennifer Doucette. The amount was not disclosed.
The store closed for three days during the handover, to allow for returns and restocking, she said.

Founded in 1992 by Sarah and Richard Zacks, Books on the Square soon built a strong following on the East Side and across the state with its casual, dog-friendly setting, personal service, author events and book clubs for all ages.
Mercedes Clifton, who owns Learning Ventures along with her husband, Rod Clifton, said they were attracted by the store’s strong reputation, excellent location and capable staff.

“I plan to build on the many attractive features of the bookstore, beginning with retaining Jennifer Doucette as store manager,” she said. She was “particularly enthusiastic” about the children’s storytimes.

“Learning Ventures is interested in learning,” Doucette said. Under the Cliftons, the store “will continue [its] successful programs for reading to children, book clubs and such special events as author signings,” she said, and “will explore customer interest in other learning opportunities.”
