PROVIDENCE – Rebecca Boss, director of the R.I. Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals, will leave the job at the end of the year, the department announced on Wednesday.
Boss has served as director since May 2017, following 10 months serving as acting director.

Boss has worked in the department for 15 years.
“Becky Boss is a dedicated public servant, a compassionate leader and a champion for Rhode Island’s most vulnerable residents,” Gina M. Raimondo said in a statement. “I’m grateful for her 15 years of service to our state, especially her work as director of BHDDH. … Rhode Island has benefited from her leadership.”
Boss’ departure follows other recent changes in the upper ranks of Raimondo’s administration, with David Ortiz being named chief of staff and Brett Smiley being named acting director of administration.
BHDDH highlighted Boss’ work to establish seven Centers of Excellence for Opioid Use Disorders and credited her leadership to position the department as a “national model for its response to the opioid crisis.”
“I’m grateful for the opportunity I’ve had to work for the governor and the people of this State,” said Boss in a statement. “We’ve built an amazing team … [and] I am confident that our progress will continue.”
