NEWPORT – Demolition began on the building at 31 America’s Cup Ave. Tuesday as the construction of a 57-room Brenton Hotel started.
The hotel will be five stories tall, with guest rooms featuring floor-to-ceiling windows and king-sized beds, according to LWH LLC, the owner of the property. The average room size is expected to be 450 square feet.
In a release, the company noted that it had worked with city and state officials as well as with the Newport Historic Commission to align the building’s contemporary design details with Newport’s “historic character.”
The hotel is expected to debut in spring 2020.
LWH is controlled by Farrar Equities, owner of the Mill Street Inn, the White Horse Tavern and Crosspoint Associates.
The architect for the project was Group One Partners, a Boston firm. The general contractor for the project is Behan Brothers, based in Newport.
The hotel will be operated by White Horse Hospitality.
The company said that the hotel is named in honor of Brenton Reef, located at the entrance to Narragansett Bay.
In its announcement, LWH said that the hotel also will feature dining and social areas as well as onsite parking on the first floor. More details were not immediately available.
