Brown exhibits focus on history of slavery

PROVIDENCE – Following up on the October report by its Steering Committee on Slavery and Justice, Brown University is sponsoring four exhibitions that show some of the original documents, journals, cargo invoices, newspaper ads and more that are cited in the report.
In the lobby of the Rockefeller Library, there are ads for slaves from the Newport Mercury, published narratives by former South County slaves, a roster of the Rhode Island “slave regiment” that fought in the Revolutionary War and documents from Brown’s early history relating to slavery and abolition. The exhibit will remain open until the end of April.
In the John Hay Library, an exhibition titled “Venus in Chains: Representations of Sex and Slavery in the Caribbean Basin” is open through March 15.
Two additional exhibitions, in the John Carter Brown Library, include a slave ship’s log book and other materials as well as a chronicle of a slave revolt in St. Domingue (Haiti) in 1791. Both exhibitions run through May.
