Brown students win bronze at Collegiate Inventors Competition

PROVIDENCE – Brown University’s CropDoc team won bronze in the undergraduate category at the 2018 Collegiate Inventors Competition at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Nov. 16.

“Using advanced optics and novel processing techniques,” team members Abigail Kohler, Jack Roswell, Eli Silvert and Alex Zhuk, with faculty adviser Chandra Madramootoo, created CropDoc to provide farmers “with actionable insights regarding the location and projected progression of pests and specific crop diseases” weeks before visual symptoms manifest, according to a news release.

Five undergraduate and six graduate finalist teams, consisting of 29 students from 11 colleges and universities across the U.S., presented their inventions to a panel of judges in Alexandria, Va.

Established in 1990, the competition has awarded more than $1 million to students.
