PROVIDENCE – Brown University students next year will see the smallest tuition increase that the school has put forth in more than a decade, while university faculty and staff are getting pay increases and bonuses.

The Ivy League university on Feb. 12 approved a 2.9% tuition increase for the 2022-23 academic year, which Brown says is the lowest increase it has implemented in 11 years. That means undergraduate students at Brown will pay $62,680 in tuition next academic year. Additionally, medical school students will see a 1.8% rise in next year’s tuition bill to $67,268.

Brown also approved a 4.3% salary increase for faculty and staff, the highest the university has put forth in a decade. Also, one-time bonuses ranging from $2,000 to $4,500 to approximately 4,600 eligible faculty and staff will be distributed by Brown, it said.

Brown President Christina H. Paxson recommended approval of the small tuition increase and pay increases for employees to the Corporation of Brown University based on the strong performance by the university’s endowment and fundraising successes. During the 2021 fiscal year, Brown’s endowment grew by 51.5% to $6.9 billion.

Paxson also said the university still recognizes that the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting students, employees and their families, along with the university finances. She also said the bonuses and pay increases for faculty and staff are in recognition of their efforts to “go to great lengths to sustain our core mission of caring for students, providing a world-class education and conducting groundbreaking research.”

“We are deeply grateful to our employees – this year’s salary pool and special bonus payment serve as an investment in the people who make the teaching, research and operations of Brown possible every day,” Paxson said.
