David Olivera
Warren resident David Oliveira was recently named a manager at Jed Cohen, Certified Public Accountant. Oliveira will be based at the firm’s New Bedford office, where he will manage accounting services, including auditing and corporate and personal tax preparation. He will also consult with corporate clients on their computer and management information system needs, and will oversee the firm’s accounting and administrative staff. Oliveira was previously a manager with Providence-based firm Kaplan, Moran, DiGennaro, Ltd., for five years. Before that her was with Goluses & Company, LLP. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Rhode Island Society of Certified Public Accountants, where he serves on the information technology committee and the accounting, auditing and peer review committee.

Seth Burke
Seth Burke has been appointed design/art director at Communication Arts Group, a 15-year old graphic/advertising design firm headquartered in Providence. He graduated magna cum laude with a bachelors degree in fine arts in graphic design from the Hartford Art School at the University of Hartford. Typography Award. He interned at CAGroup as part of his studies.
Sara Scott
Sara Scott has been named director of the Providence-based full-service communications firm, RDW Group. She is responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations of the creative, traffic and production departments and 18 staff members. She initially joined RDW Group as a senior account executive, handling such accounts as Plymouth Savings Bank and Rhode Island Public Transit Authority. Prior to her employment at RDW, she was managing art director at CramerSweeney, Inc. in New Jersey before advancing to director of account services. A native of Ledyard, Conn., Scott earned her bachelor of arts in graphic design from Western Connecticut State University.

David DeQuattro
David DeQuat-tro has been promoted to associate of The Robinson Green Beretta Corporation. Formerly a project architect with the firm from 1992 to 1996, DeQuattro rejoined last year as a project manager. Since then he has contributed to the design for the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority Transit Maintenance Facility in Providence and the new Smithfield Commons shopping center, among other projects. DeQuattro has dual degrees in architecture and building sciences from Roger Williams University. He has served as secretary for the Town of Smithfield Conservation Committee and on the Board of Directors of the Rhode Island Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

Raymond A. Dionne
Raymond A. Dionne has been appointed a vice president in the commercial services division of First Federal Savings Bank of America. He first joined FIRSTFED last March as senior business development officer. He will continue to help the customers in the Greater Fall River and Taunton areas with their business financing needs. Dionne earned his bachelor of arts degree at Fordham University New York City and his bachelor of science degree at UMass/Amherst. He is a member of the Executive Allocation Committee of the United Way of Greater Fall River. He is also member and director of the Rotary Club of Fall River and tournament director of the Somerset Girls’ Independent Softball League.

Jonathan Epstein
Jonathan Epstein has joined the marketing strategy firm of Firebrand, LLC as a program consultant. He is responsible for the creation and execution of strategic marketing and business development programs. He brings significant marketing consulting and business planning experience to Firebrand. Prior to joining the firm he directed and independent consulting company and worked for Adidas/Salomon A.G. and Chase Manhattan Bank. After receiving an undergraduate degree from Syracuse University, Epstein earned a master’s degree in business administration from the F.W. Olin Graduate School of Business at Babson College. Epstein recently received two distinguished awards while completing his graduate work at Babson; he was a finalist in the Donald A. Douglass Contest for Entrepreneurial Excellence and winner of the 1998 EFMD International Case Writing Competition in Marketing.

Charles T. Schmidt
The University of Rhode Island has re-named one of its well-known and highly respected research centers “The Charles T. Schmidt, Jr. Labor Research Center”. In 1983, Schmidt founded the LRS. He is now director and professor emeritus of labor and industrial relations at the University. His retirement took effect last June, but he remains on campus in a part-time role and is heading the national search for a successor. Schmidt’s major contribution to the center was the tripartite model, which allowed it to be a place where the management side, the neutral side and the union side could come together to study, research, and learn together. He has been at URI since 1968, after earning his Ph.D. from Michigan State University.

Brett D. Blanke
Brett D. Blanke has been appointed as the national sales manager of data communication products at AFC Cable Systems, Inc. In this newly created position he will be responsible for account development, sales-force and customer training, and the overall design of sales programs. Blanke has held a variety of sales positions in the data communications market, most recently as regional data communications sales manager for WESCO, a national electrical and data communications distributor. Prior to that he was employed as regional sales manager for Helix/HiTemp and Chromatic Technologies, a manufacturer of copper and fiber optic data cables. Earlier in his career he worked at Berk-Tek, as regional network cable systems sales manager, and as national marketing and business development manager for Alcatel Canada Wire.

George B. Laban
George B. Laban has been named president and CEO of VNS Homecare of Narragansett. Laban’s appointment was announced by the non-profit homecare agency’s board chairman, Norman Campbell, Ph.D. VNS is currently going through a transition into a new, non-profit home health organization in a partnership with South County Hospital. Laban was hired with the intention that he would become the senior administrator of the combined entity. The Norwell, Mass. resident has extensive health care management experience, including a decade as president and CEO of the South Shore Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice of the South Shore in Braintree, Mass. During his tenure he was responsible for bringing together the home health agency and South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, Mass., where he most recently served as a senior vice president. Laban’s educational background includes a master’s degree in business administration from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
