Cadence buys Cranston site for $3.5M

CRANSTON – Cadence Science, a medical and scientific products maker with a plant in Lincoln and a sales office in New York, is looking to expand with its purchase of a 43,000-square-foot office and industrial building at 2080 Plainfield Pike.
The property offers plenty of room for expansion: Located in the Western Cranston Industrial Complex, it includes nearly 6.5 acres of land.
Its sale – for the asking price of $3.5 million – was announced today by Rodman Real Estate Inc.’s president, Sheldon Rodman, and vice president, Thomas O. Sweeney, whose company assisted Cadence in its statewide search.
“We are excited about the future prospects of growing our operation in Cranston and believe the new facility will be a key strategic enabler of growth for our Science division,” said Peter Harris, the CEO of Staunton, Va.- parent company Cadence Inc. (The scientific, medical and industrial products company, although not listed on any exchange, has more than 200 stockholders. Shares and investor information are available through its corporate Web site.)
The parcel formerly was home to The Quill Co. Inc., a family-owned pen company that ended its 62-year run in early 2008. (READ MORE) The bulk of Quill’s assets were acquired by Oak Brook, Ill.-based Sanford LP, a unit of Newell Rubbermaid, and moved to Wisconsin.
Cadence plans to refit the former Quill headquarters for use by its science division. Cadence Science will use the plant to manufacture both medical device components and assemblies and high-performance fluid-handling components for scientific applications, the parent company said.
“We are very excited about the purchase of this property by Cadence Science Inc.,” Cranston Mayor Allan Fung said in a statement today. “Medical-field manufacturing is exactly the type of light-impact industry that works so well in a city like Cranston.”
The transaction closed in mid-February, Sweeney told PBN.
