Cambridge-based BioLabs examines expansion into R.I.

PROVIDENCE – A Cambridge, Mass.-based corporation that provides co-working laboratory space for startups in the life sciences industry is evaluating an expansion into Rhode Island.

The R.I. Commerce Corp. has authorized a $100,000 grant for Bioinnovation Labs LLC, which will conduct a study to determine whether the Rhode Island market can support the work space.

The company operates a series of shared labs under the BioLabs brand in university-based locations including San Francisco, New York and Raleigh, N.C., as well as LabCentral in Cambridge.

It focuses on early-stage bioscience companies, and gives university teams access to labs outside the university setting, according to a Commerce RI overview.

The company has been looking at Rhode Island for a number of years, according to Commerce RI staff, and has already conducted a preliminary study of an expansion here.

The $100,000 grant approved by the Commerce RI board is under the Innovation Network Matching Grant program which allows companies interested in moving into or expanding in the state to seek feasibility grants.
