PROVIDENCE – A dozen Care New England Health System doctors are members of CNE’s new Physician Leadership Academy inaugural class.

The yearlong academy, which started this month, focuses on implementing quality improvement initiatives with the goal of containing costs, changing payer relationships, the influence of accountable care organizations on population health and health care financing, bundled payment initiatives, Medicare and Medicaid finance, market consolidation, disparities in health outcomes, and funding for medical education and research.

Presenters are to include regional and national health care experts, along with members of CNE’s executive leadership team.

Academy participants will participate in development at CNE or on a team-building project, and be paired with an executive-level adviser for the duration of the program.

“At the culmination of this enriching and educational opportunity, participants will be expected to have gained a greater level of insight into their personal leadership approach, better understand health care finance and funding mechanisms, have deeper knowledge of population health management and accountable care organizations, and understand aspects of hospital and medical group operations, among other health care-related expertise,” Dr. James E. Fanale, CNE’s president and CEO, said.

Fanale directs the program, along with Dr. Chester Hedgepeth III, executive chief of cardiology; Dr. Maureen Phipps, executive chief of obstetrics and gynecology and chair of Brown University’s department of obstetrics and gynecology; and Dr. Raymond Powrie, executive chief of medicine.

Class participants are: Dr. Kevin Baill and Dr. Amy Halt of Butler Hospital; Dr. Adam Czynski, Dr. Erica Hardy, Dr. Roxanne Vrees and Dr. Erika Werner of Women & Infants Hospital; Dr. Chris Furey, Dr. John Gelzhiser, Dr. Melissa Murphy, Dr. Naveed Rana and Dr. JoAnn Wilkinson of Kent County Memorial Hospital; and Dr. Ana Fulton.
