Celebrate National Honey Bee Day at Coastal Growers’ Market at

Join us at Coastal Growers’ Market at Casey Farm on Saturday, August 16, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to celebrate National Honey Bee Day and the lives of these remarkable creatures. Learn about their habits, beekeeping and ways to protect them in these challenging times for bees through a host of activities from a demonstration hive with bee keeping experts on hand to answer questions, to bee storytelling and a scavenger hunt around the farm to identify the favorite flowers of honey bees.
Beekeeper Celeste Nadworny, of Fruit Hill Apiaries in North Providence and the RI Beekeepers Association, will join the event with her demonstration hive and bee suit to answer all bee and bee keeping questions. Celeste will offer tastes of the different flavors from each season of honey flow in RI.
Local storyteller, Wendy Fachon, will lead scavenger hunts around the farm at 10 a.m. and noon to find flowers that honey bees prefer for pollen gathering and will tell her bee story, “Just Bee!” at 11 a.m.
Local author and beekeeper, Susan Kurz, will be at the market to sign copies of her graphic novel, Beecoming Sophie: “ a magical tale that will inform young people about the crisis with honeybee health and inspire them to make a difference and bee the change they want to see in the world. The story weaves issues crucial to the worldwide decline in honeybee population into a story of high school student Sophie’s awakening and the resulting journey she shares with her friends and family. As common objections and fears about bees are addressed, readers will find them replaced with awareness and respect for the beautiful honeybee, so critical to our environment and the food on our tables.”
