Champlin grant aids R.I. Food Bank agencies

PROVIDENCE – Fifteen emergency food providers have received coolers and freezers thanks to a grant by The Champlin Foundations to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank.

The Food Bank said the grant will allow these high-traffic member agencies to serve more perishable foods, such as dairy products and fresh produce.

“The cooler and freezer will help us feed people,” said Modesta Pellot, educational director for St. George’s in Pawtucket, which serves more than 250 people per month through its food pantry and soup kitchen. “They will allow us to take advantage of a wider variety of food.”

This was the second Champlin Foundations grant the Food Bank has received to help it handle the increasing amount of perishable foods it received and distributed in recent years. Last year, a similar grant provided 22 coolers and 14 freezers to 26 member agencies. That gift’s success led the foundation to expand the initiative this year.

In all, 41 member agencies have been helped by the grants, receiving a total of 25 freezers and 32 coolers, the Food Bank said.

The Rhode Island Community Food Bank serves about 50,000 Rhode Islanders through its network of nearly 400 member agencies. For more information or to make a donation, visit www.rifoodbank.org.
