PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island School of Design Auditorium will host American artist Christine Sun Kim on Oct. 28 for the 48th Annual Gail Silver Memorial Lecture, presented by the RISD Museum.
The event will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and is free and open to the public, with registration required.
Kim, whose multidisciplinary work spans drawing, performance, video and large-scale murals, is known for exploring communication, language and sound through visual art. Using musical notation, infographics, and both American Sign Language and written English, she examines how people create and interpret meaning. During the lecture, Kim will discuss her artistic practice and the ideas that inform her work.
“Christine Sun Kim’s work expands our understanding of communication, inviting us to think differently about sound, language and the ways we make meaning,” said Conor Moynihan Bonacossa, a curator at the RISD Museum. “Her practice is intellectually rigorous, deeply engaging and often bitingly witty.”
Kim has exhibited internationally at venues, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Queens Museum and the Drawing Center. American Sign Language interpretation will be provided during the program.
The Gail Silver Memorial Lecture honors the legacy of former RISD Museum docent Gail Silver and brings prominent artists and thinkers to Providence each year.
