Citizens Bank taps Murphy to lead business banking

PROVIDENCE – Citizens Bank on Tuesday appointed Jack Murphy president of business banking.

Murphy, an industry veteran of 25 years, takes over the position from Chris Ward. The former president is leaving to “pursue another opportunity,” according a press release. He leaves after just more than a year on the job.

Murphy will work under Brad Conner, vice chairman and head of consumer banking.

“Jack is a strong and capable leader with a deep understanding of the banking needs of small- and medium-sized businesses,” Conner said.

Murphy, like his predecessor, ascends to the new role after serving as head of business banking sales. He managed more than 400 bankers for the Providence-based bank. Citizens business banking is for companies with annual revenue of up to $25 million.

Prior to joining Citizens last year, Murphy worked at Santander Bank.

“[Murphy] has a long track record of helping companies optimize their financial performance,” Conner added. “We welcome Jack to this new role and look forward to his leadership as we continue to grow this important business.”

Citizens Bank is a subsidiary of Citizens Financial Group Inc., which recently reported $150.3 billion in assets. The company reported record profit during the quarter that ended March 31.
