Collection of 1% hotel tax increases 13.6% in Jan.

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island’s collection of the 1% hotel tax report in January totaled $229,243, a 13.6% increase from January 2018, according to the R.I. Department of Revenue Wednesday.

The increase in collection was largely driven by a $27,694 increase in collections from hotels to a total of $179,343. Collections from room resellers and hosting platforms in January also increased year over year from $2,515 to $5,923. These increases were offset by a decline in collections of the 1% hotel tax from realtors and homeowners from $47,669 in January 2018 to $43,977 in January 2019.

The largest collection in January for any municipality was in Providence, at a total of $66,461. The largest nominal increase in collection year over year in January was in Middletown, increasing $7,840 to $17,479. The largest nominal decline was in New Shoreham, where collections declined $11,705 year over year to $27,125.

Collection of the 1% hotel tax fiscal year to date totaled $3.2 million, a 1.9% decline from $3.3 million one year prior. The decline included a 1.1% increase in collections from hotels to a total of $2.7 million, a 10.9% increase in room reseller and hosting platform collections to a total of $79,232 and a 18.2% decline in collections from realtors and homeowners from $530,689 to $433,869.
