PROVIDENCE – The collection of the 5% hotel tax in Rhode Island in March totaled $1.14 million, a 3% increase year over year, according to the R.I. Department of Revenue Friday.
Collections from traditional hotels totaled $1.06 million, a slight decline year over year, while collection from hosting platforms and room resellers totaled $82,753 for the month, more than doubling such collections in March 2018.
Allocation to regional tourism districts for the month totaled $386,602 in March, a 7.8% increase year over year. Of the districts, the Convention Authority of Providence received the largest amount at $122,626.
Allocations to municipalities totaled $260,284 in March, a 1.8% increase year over year. The largest allocation to any municipality in the state was to Providence at $81,534.
Allocation to the R.I. Commerce Corp. declined 2.5% year over year to $332,906 in March.
Allocation to the Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau increased 6.2% year over year to $162,273.
Fiscal year to date, collection of the 5% hotel tax in March totaled $16 million, a 1.9% increase year over year, due to a 17.9% increase in collections from hotels and hosting platforms and room resellers to a total of $520,995.
