SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The Compass School has been awarded $500,000 from the R.I. Office of Energy Resources to help improve the energy efficiency of a large building renovation project, the OER announced Thursday.
The grant come from funds generated by Rhode Island’s participation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative. The building, with the use of the grant, will meet the state’s voluntary green building guidelines established by executive order, called the RI Stretch Code.
The project was selected through a competitive request for proposals project. The funds were offered to eligible municipal, public and charter school buildings.
Torrado Architects designed the new school space.
“The Compass School is renovating an old building on its campus and has committed to making the project exceed base-code energy efficiency standards. The project will set a great example for other schools to follow,” said State Energy Commissioner Carol Grant in prepared remarks. “It is also in line with Gov. [Gina M.] Raimondo’s goal to make our schools safer, warmer, drier and more comfortable for students, so they can focus on learning.”
