Use: A pair of early-1900s conjoined commercial buildings in the Downtown Providence Historic District have been converted into luxury residential apartments in the latest redesign by ASH NYC. The project breathes new life into the Winslow Building, on Mathewson Street, a three-story brick building built by Martin & Hall in 1897, and a circa-1918 two-story brick building facing Weybosset Street, which once housed Liggett’s Drug Store. In addition to 12 new apartments, the ground floor will boast five retail spaces, which were historically occupied by a dry goods store, photo-supply store and electric-supply company. The upper floors were once occupied by a dentist, engraver, French teacher and piano company, which had a large recital space on the third floor called Cottelle Hall. The renovation is in keeping with the original historic elements of the property, preserving the original floor plan, ceilings, window casings, interior paneling and aspects of the historical cast-iron, aluminum and glass storefronts.
