Construction employment in Providence metro ticks up 3% in July

PROVIDENCE – Construction employment in the Providence-Warwick-Fall River metropolitan area increased 3% year over year to 26,500 workers in July, according to the Associated General Contractors of America Wednesday.

The rate of increase ranked No. 172 among 358 metro areas.

  • In the Taunton-Middleborough-Norton, Mass., metro area, construction employment remained unchanged year over year in July at 3,600 workers.
  • In the New Bedford metro area, construction employment declined 4% year over year to 2,700 workers.
  • Construction employment in the Norwich-New London, Conn.-Westerly metro area increased 10% year over year to 4,400. The rate of increase tied for the 18th-fastest rise of the measured metro areas.

Construction employment increased in 71% of the 358 measured metro areas.

Ken Simonson, the association’s chief economist, said worker shortages are pervasive across all regions and nearly all crafts.

“[A] survey asked firms about their experience this year in filling 20 different types of hourly craft positions,” Simonson said. “For all but one of these trades, at least half the respondents said filling the position is more difficult than a year ago. Firms in all four regions – Northeast, Midwest, South and West – reported widespread difficulty filling craft positions.”
